Mike Sturgeleski and Olympic Companies, Inc. - Volunteer and Employer provide tools for transitioning participants to work

Mike was recently recognized by Goodwill/Easter Seals as Volunteer of the Year - 2004, for his commitment to working with participants transitioning into the working world. The following article and photo were taken from an informational booklet put together by Goodwill/Easter Seals.

Providing a "real world" perspective on building confidence in job interiews. Highlighting successful steps to be productive at work. Offering a practical view of employers' expectations. Volunteer Mike Sturgeleski offers mentoring advice to Goodwill/Easter Seals participants transitioning into the working world.

Sturgeleksi is Regional Employment Coordinator and Corporate Safety Director for Olympic Companies, Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., a commercial drywall and plastering contractor. The company is a committed supporter of Goodwill/Easter Seals' Construction Skills Training Program, donating safety equipment and drywall materials for participants to develop their skills.

Sturgeleski also is a member of Goodwill/Easter Seals' Construction Skills Business Advisory Council. "My goal is to teach participants the "Do's and Don'ts' about finding a job," he says. "Sometimes it's just a matter of showing them successful ways to get one foot in the door with an employer."

At a recent Construction Skills Training class, he stressed to participants that this involves wearing the proper clothing when applying for work, arriving on time for an interview, completing the entire work application form and being polite to the receptionist.

"I'm absolutely dedicated to giving participants the information they need," Sturgeleski says. Olympic Companies also has given job opportunities to program graduates interested in a construction career. "Goodwill provides a terrific program to train participants, and we keep them in mind when hiring."
